The Posedonian (Lower Jurassic) black shale is studied as a prominent example for this type of unconventional reservoir rock. In 2011 the magnetotellurics (MT) working group in our section conducted MT/CSMT experiments near Minden in Lower Saxony to follow Posedonian black shales from outcrops into the deepening North German basin. We are planning coincident controlled-source seismic reflection and tomography experiments along parts of the MT profile. The seismic field work will be carried out in autumn 2013. A wide range of conventional and advanced processing and imaging techniques will be applied to determine the distribution and the inherent seismic properties of the Posedonian black shales and surrounding sediments. Crucial points will be a comparison with the MT/CSMT models, and the integration with other results from basin modeling, reservoir geology, rock physics and related fields.
