Brief overview │ What does the Earthquake Explorer offer?

Visitors to the GFZ website "Earthquake Explorer" can use filters to decide which earthquakes of which magnitude and which time period they would like to display. Red circles symbolize earthquake records from the last two weeks. The most recent event also flashes. Various parameters can be added to the map. For example, the map shows the country borders, the relief, predicted ground movements, plate boundaries, city names, the seismic hazard or the respective population density. A detailed video at the end of this picture gallery explains all the functions of the Earthquake Explorer in detail.

The plate boundaries can be displayed using filters. Earthquakes occur more frequently along plate boundaries. Earthquakes are more or less intense depending on the type of plate boundary. Particularly strong earthquakes occur where one plate slowly slides under another. These are the so-called subduction zones. The type of plate boundary is not shown on this map and must be researched elsewhere.

The "Seismic hazard" filter uses colours to show which regions could potentially be affected by earthquakes and to what extent. Areas at highest risk are marked in red.

The Earthquake Explorer can be used to display all earthquakes recorded in a region since 2007 or a maximum of 1000 events. Here you can see very clearly that many earthquakes have occurred in Central America.

In addition to the seismic hazard, the Earthquake Explorer can also display the population density. Users can also select this in the top right-hand menu.

Various maps can be selected as a basis. Only with the map base "Country boundaries" (OpenStreetMap) can city and country names also be displayed via an additional filter. "GEBCO Beta" is a global continuous terrain model for sea and land. This data set is a fusion of land topography with measured and estimated bathymetry. The "ETOPO1 Arc-Minute Global Relief Model" was generated by the American National Geophysical Data Center from various global and regional digital data sets.
