Research Data

Research data are generated and provided in all GFZ Sections. This page will guide you to (1) research data repositories with data publication services for geosciences data, (2) to the main services and data portals for finding research data (and infrastructure), and (3) to data and information portals that are addressed to the interested public and policy makers.

Repositories

GFZ Data Services

GFZ Data Services is an international domain repository for research data and scientific software from the Earth system sciences, hosted at GFZ. The curated data are archived, made permanently accessible and published with a digital object identifier (DOI). They range from large dynamic datasets from global monitoring networks with real-time acquisition to international services in geodesy and geophysics to small, heterogeneous datasets collected by individual researchers or small teams (“long-tail data”). In addition to DOI registration and data archiving itself, the GFZ Data Services team offers comprehensive advice from scientists and IT specialists.

GEOFON Data Centre | GFZ Seismological Data Archive

GEOFON operates the GFZ Seismological Data Archive, which facilitates access to data from the GEOFON stations, from GIPP passive experiments and from plate boundary observatories, as well as from many partner networks/institutions, providing a permanent and secure archive. All waveform data and metadata are provided in standard seismological data formats using standard services alongside with additional meta information about the data. Currently over 100 seismic networks are distributed to thousands of users yearly through the GFZ access point as well as from federated archives at European and global level. GEOFON takes particular care in its data management policies fostering the adoption of the FAIR data management principles and the GFZ guidelines for research data.

IGSN International Generic Sample Number

The IGSN International Generic Sample Number is a globally unique persistent identifier (PID) for the identification of physical samples and collections with a discovery functionality on the Internet. IGSNs are citable in the scientific literature and make it possible to digitally connect data and publications directly to the samples from which they originate, thus closing one of the last gaps in the complete provenance of research results. The GFZ IGSN Service is embedded in GFZ Data Services and includes the offer for IGSN registration, support of the sample catalogue and comprehensive advice on best practices for sample metadata and their findability.

FID GEO | Specialised Information Service Geosciences

The DFG-funded Specialised Information Service Geosciences (FID GEO) aims to improve access to digital knowledge resources for the geosciences and to contribute to the open information infrastructure in Germany. Our FID GEO service portfolio for the geoscientific community includes dedicated publication services (with DOI) for texts, research data and scientific software together with our partner repositories GEO-LEOe-docs (SUB Göttingen) and GFZ Data Services. On the other hand, we offer comprehensive advice for researchers, learned societies and institutions on electronic publication strategies and open science practices and are increasingly acknowledged as a a centre of expertise for the changing publication culture in the geosciences.

ISDC | Information System and Data Center

The Information System and Data Center (ISDC) is an access point for diverse geoscientific data, corresponding metadata, scientific documentation and software tools. The majority of the data and information that are offered to the public are global geomonitoring products such as satellite orbits (e.g., of Low Earth Orbiters) or Earth gravity field models (e.g., derived from GRACE or GRACE-FO mission data), Earth System Modelling data as well as various geomagnetic and atmospheric data. The design of the ISDC portal and its operation is a project of the ISDCteam within GFZ's “IT Services and Operations” section together with GFZ's sections 1.2 "Global Geomonitoring and Gravity Field", 1.3 "Earth System Modelling" and 2.3 "Geomagnetism". We invite you to use our services and they will benefit your scientific work.

Data and Research Infrastructure Search Portals

ResearchInfrastructure@GFZ

The research infrastructure at GFZ comprises satellite systems, global station networks and regional observatories, as well as instrument networks, laboratories, instrument pools and data systems. ResearchInfrastructure@GFZ is the central discovery portal for research infrastructures and data at GFZ. It enables structured searches across disciplines, product categories (data, services and software), persons and GFZ sections, and provides basic information with links to further information on the GFZ websites and data access.

DataHub Earth Data Portal

The DataHub is a cross-center initiative with participation of the seven research centers of the Research Field Earth and Environment in the Helmholtz Association. As an integrative initiative, the DataHub is anchored in the joint research program of the research field to bring together the previously separate data of marine, terrestrial and atmospheric research as well as their cross-sectional fields in an open, interoperable information infrastructure (hub). The Earth Data Portal intents to be the central access point to data from Helmholtz Centres of the Earth and Environment research field.
