The Specialised Information Service for Geosciences (FID GEO) aims to improve access to digital knowledge resources for the geosciences and wants to contribute to an open information infrastructure in Germany. Funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the „Specialised Information Services“ programme, FID GEO complements existing university and research institutions by providing nationwide services.
In the spirit of Open Science, FID GEO takes a holistic view of the entire chain of scientific results in the geosciences - from samples to research data and software to scientific articles. Our aim is to digitally link these elements in the best possible way, thereby promoting the visibility, reusability and transparency of geoscientific research. We have always seen text and data as two complementary components of the FID GEO service.
Tasks
The project focuses on four central areas:
- Electronic publishing: Development of a sustainable service for Open Access publication of scientific work, in particular through the use and improvement of our domain repository GEO-LEOe-docs (SUB Göttingen).
- Research data publishing: Supporting the publication and long-term archiving of geoscientific research data and scientific software via the domain repository GFZ Data Services (GFZ)
- Digitisation: indexing and providing access to previously hardly accessible grey literature, copyright-free print media and thematic maps.
- Consultancy: comprehensive advice for researchers, academic societies and institutions on electronic publication strategies and open science practices.
In addition, the FID GEO is becoming a centre of expertise for the changing publication culture in the geosciences.
