As part of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), the NFDI4Earth consortium is establishing a service for the Earth system sciences that addresses the digital needs of Earth system research. This was decided by the Joint Science Conference (GWK) on July 2, 2021. This follows the recommendation of an international science-led review process coordinated by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

NFDI4Earth (i) connects scientists from Earth system research in national and international interdisciplinary networks, (ii) creates uniform regulations for the provision of quality-assured and easily integrated research data, (iii) integrates existing research data repositories and (iv) develops the next generation of data exchange and data analysis environments with the research community. NFDI4Earth forms the necessary basis for innovative and interdisciplinary research approaches, many of which also address pressing global challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, land use change, environmental pollution and natural hazards.

Tasks

As co-spokesperson of the consortium, the GFZ is responsible for the task areas “International Networking” and “Cultural Change in Research Data Management in Earth System Sciences” and, with its broad international network, contributes to embedding the national NFDI4Earth initiative internationally. The diverse data infrastructures of the GFZ, which are already available to the geoscientific community, will be linked to NFDI4Earth. In addition, the GFZ will oversee the establishment of the “NFDI4Earth Academy”, modeled on the Geo.X Young Academy.
