World map of seismic hazard - according to the Global Seismic Hazard Assessment Program (GSHAP)

Online service for downloading configured sections of the GSHAP world map

The GSHAP project was one of the global initiatives within the framework of the UN International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR), declared by the United Nations General Assembly for the 1990s. Around 190 geoscientists from all continents were involved in the project under the overall leadership of D. Giardini (ETH Zurich). One of the GSHAP regional centers was set up at the former GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam GFZ, now the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, which was responsible for the GSHAP research work on Europe, including the entire Mediterranean region, under the leadership of G. Grünthal. The objectives and the scientific approach of the GSHAP project were published in a special volume of the Annales of Geophysics (1993). The condensed compilation of the results of the program are the subject of a special volume of the Annales of Geophysics (1999) with the paper on the world map of seismic hazard by the main contributors D. Giardini, G. Grünthal, K. Shedlock und P Zhang (1999).
