Last year, the Northern Lights were seen over Brandenburg for the first time in a long time. Prof. Dr. Yuri Shprits, Dr. Elodie Kendall, Dr. Angelica Castillo from the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences and Katja Stoll from the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) gave an impressive presentation yesterday on how these fascinating light effects are created and why they can be seen here in rare cases. In a sold-out theatre, visitors learned a lot about spaceweather and its impact on space-based telecommunications, broadcasting, weather services and navigation, right down to power distribution. They also marvelled at magnificent images of solar storms and polar lights in full dome format. Knowledge transfer at its best! (Credits: U. Sylla)
