Mineral-fluid-biota interactions in terrestrial-aquatic interfaces
I am an environmental geoscientist studying mineral-fluid-biota interactions in terrestrial-aquatic interfaces. Specifically, I focus on how redox-active iron minerals regulate the cycling, stabilisation, and transport of organic carbon, nutrients, and contaminants from soils to aquatic systems, which are key processes for landscape evolution and climate feedbacks, especially in climate-sensitive environments like the Arctic. My work links nanoscale mineral-organic matter reactions to ecosystem-scale biogeochemical fluxes using complementary laboratory and field approaches, combining synchrotron X-ray (micro)spectroscopy (NEXAFS), ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS), electron microscopy, and isotopic and microbial-ecology tools. Since January 2026, I have been a DAAD PRIME Fellow at TU Berlin and Aarhus University (on a fully seconded basis), focusing on organic matter transformation and export in iron-rich polar wetlands.
