Solar Research at the Einstein Tower: Insights into the Past and Present
GUIDED TOUR AND INFORMATION BOOTH (ID: 1)
The Einstein Tower will also be open to the public as part of the Open House. Visitors will gain fascinating insights into the history and present state of solar research and learn about the significant role the observatory played in the experimental verification of Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. Due to the spatial constraints of this historic, protected building, a maximum of 20 people may be in the Einstein Tower at any one time. Therefore, waiting times may occur if there is a large number of visitors.

Large Refractor: Fascinating exhibits and the world’s fourth-largest refracting telescope
GUIDED TOUR, INFO STAND (ID: 2)
Researchers present exciting exhibits and introduce the world's fourth-largest lens telescope. The Great Refractor features an 80- and a 50-centimeter lens and is therefore a double refractor. In 1904, Johannes Hartmann succeeded here in discovering the interstellar medium. After damage during the war and decades of inactivity, the heritage-listed telescope was comprehensively restored thanks to the specially founded "Förderverein Großer Refraktor Potsdam e.V." and reopened in 2006. In 2024, the Great Refractor celebrated its 125th anniversary. Today it regularly serves as the venue for the AIP's popular observation nights.
