At the GFZ and RIFS, we believe groundbreaking science thrives on diverse perspectives. We are aware that when we exclude talented individuals based on background, gender, ethnicity, or any other characteristic, we miss out on crucial insights and solutions.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is not simply a goal; it's fundamental to our mission. As a research center dedicated to understanding Earth’s systems for the benefit of society, we recognize that the challenges we address, from climate change to natural hazards, impact everyone. Therefore, our research reflects the diversity of the world we serve. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all voices are heard, valued, and empowered to contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future.

In 2024 we embarked in a solid strategy to make the GFZ and RIFS more diverse an inclusive. To achieve this, we are implementing a comprehensive DEI project focused on three key areas. 

1. We are transforming our recruiting process to ensure equitable opportunities for all. This includes providing bias training for recruiters and hiring managers, revising job descriptions to use inclusive language, expanding our sourcing strategies to reach a wider range of candidates, and implementing standardized interview processes.
    
2. We are investing in leadership development to equip our leaders with the skills and knowledge to champion DEI. This involves providing specialized DEI leadership training, establishing mentorship programs, integrating DEI goals into leadership performance evaluations, and securing strong executive sponsorship for DEI initiatives.
    
3. We are dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered. We are supporting the formation and growth of Grassroots initiatives and promoting inclusive communication and events. We are committed to ongoing evaluation and improvement of these initiatives to ensure that we are creating a truly inclusive and equitable environment for all members of the GFZ and RIFS community.
