re3data COREF | re3data - Community Driven Open Reference for Research Data Repositories

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has been funding the re3data project “re3data - Community Driven Open Reference for Research Data Repositories (COREF)” since January 2020. It is a joint project of the Berlin School of Library and Information Science at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, DataCite e.V., the Helmholtz Open Science Office at the GFZ Helmholtz Center for Geosciences and the KIT Library at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

re3data is a globally recognized directory for research data repositories that currently lists more than 2,700 repositories. The publicly accessible service was developed as part of two projects funded by the German Research Foundation (2012-2016) and is used by researchers and services worldwide for research. Scientific communities, funding organizations, research institutions and services rely on the up-to-date and precise descriptions and consider re3data a reliable source.

A central goal of the re3data COREF project was the further professionalization of re3data and the provision of reliable and adaptable descriptions of research data repositories. re3data provides core descriptions of the repositories that can be meaningfully referenced and cited by users and are permanently suitable for identification. A particular focus is on unique identification for automated exchange between services (M2M), which is currently not yet possible. To this end, the existing technical platform will be further developed to facilitate the reuse of information on research data repositories at a high qualitative level. As part of the project, funding institutions and publishers will be specifically approached to integrate re3data into their guidelines and thus promote the use of suitable, trustworthy repositories that comply with the FAIR principles.the project has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) since 2020. Section 5.1 was involved in the project in an advisory capacity, particularly in the context of metadata schema.
