Section 5.2 | eScience Centre

Overview

The results of computer science are changing the technological framework and the way in which research is carried out in all scientific fields. eScience describes a vision of future scientific work and the medium to long-term development of scientific practice towards this goal.

The mission of the eScience Centre (5.2) is to implement the digital transformation in the geosciences using current and future-proof information technologies (IT). For this purpose, various services are offered and provided for the scientific sections of the GFZ as well as other Helmholtz Centres and scientific organizations.

The eScience Centre is also involved in strategic and organizational development in the areas of research data infrastructures, research software engineering and eScience platforms / digital twins at the GFZ, within the Helmholtz Association and in national and international initiatives.

Topics

The core focus of the eScience Centre is digital transformation and the associated digital change. The eScience Centre's mission is to accompany the GFZ's sections and working groups in this continuous process of change and to support them in the areas of Research Software Engineering (RSE), research data infrastructures, and eScience platforms.

Projects

The eScience Centre supports researchers in their daily work by developing professional research software that meets the latest standards of Research Software Engineering (RSE). We not only advise on project management and requirements analysis, but also share best practices for developing scientific software. We also actively contribute our expertise to various initiatives and projects.

Data, Products, Services

The software developed at the eScience Centre in various projects and initiatives is not only offered as Open Source Software to the community for free use and further development, but is also made available as digital infrastructure. These services are available both within the GFZ and the Helmholtz Association, as well as nationally and internationally.
