The Helmholtz Climate Initiative REKLIM (Regional Climate Change and Humans) is bringing together nine research centres within the Helmholtz Association to generate essential regional information on climate change that will be transferred to society. REKLIM combines regional observation, process studies and coupled climate simulations, with a focus on regional climate change and the connections to humans. Moreover, it works across the borders of disciplines (including the social sciences), methodologies and individual research centres. By doing so, REKLIM helps to provide a sound basis for making informed climate-related decisions.
In REKLIM we are providing data-based information on past climates and environments provide at a very high, human-relevant, temporal resolution. In particular, Cecile Blanchet is speaker of the Research Theme 3 “Extreme events across temporal and spatial scales” together with her colleague Monica Ionita from the AWI Bremerhaven.
We are interested in tracking past extreme events (floods, droughts, volcanic eruptions, etc…) during periods of our geological history that were warmer than today or that have experienced rapid climatic shifts. This provides us with unique insights into the functioning of regional climates and environments in response to global perturbations. Our results are then integrated in the frame of paleoclimate modelling to obtain a full mechanistic understanding of climatic processes.
