PODCAST I Geothermal Energy: The Hidden Key to Our Future?

Prof. Dr. Magdalena Scheck-Wenderoth in conversation with Lars Rohwer, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group’s rapporteur on geothermal energy.

Geothermal Energy: The Hidden Key to Our Future?
Could geothermal energy hold the key to the heating transition? What projects are already underway in Germany, and what contribution can geothermal energy actually make, both in rural and urban areas? What potential risks are associated with this technology, and how can public acceptance be increased? In this episode, we’ll also take a look at current policy measures, including the Geothermal Energy Acceleration Act and the High-Tech Agenda for Germany.

We speak with Lars Rohwer, a member of the German Bundestag since 2021. From 1991 to 1994 and again from 1998 to 2022, he served in the Saxon State Parliament, where, among other roles, he served as the CDU parliamentary group’s spokesperson on energy policy. In the Bundestag, Lars Rohwer is a member of the Committees on Economic Affairs and Energy and on Housing, Urban Development, Construction, and Local Government. He serves as the CDU/CSU parliamentary group’s rapporteur on geothermal energy. He also participated in coalition negotiations on climate and energy issues.

In this episode, he speaks with Prof. Dr. Magdalena Scheck-Wenderoth. She is the director of the Department of Geosystems and head of the Subsurface Process Modeling Section at the GFZ Helmholtz Center for Geosciences. Together with her team, she conducts research on the geological subsurface—particularly in sedimentary basins—and models the processes occurring within them. She has been a section head at the GFZ since 2008 and department director since 2014. In 2013, she became a professor of sedimentary basin analysis at RWTH Aachen University, and in 2024 she moved to the Technical University of Berlin to take up the professorship in sedimentary basins and georesources.

This episode was recorded on April 20, 2026.
