From 28 September to 12 October 2025, our researchers Prof. Jean Braun, Dr. Hui Tang and PhD student Wenchao Cheng took part in the INITIATE Doctoral Network Summer School, held in the Southern Pyrenees Foreland Basin. This two-week training programme brought together all doctoral candidates and supervisors of the INITIATE network, with contributions from partner institutions including the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya and the UNESCO Global Geopark Orígens. The summer school combined lectures, practical workshops, and extensive field activities focusing on the tectonic and fluvial evolution of foreland basins. Participants deepened their understanding of sedimentary processes, mass-movement dynamics (such as debris flows), and hydrogeological systems. During a week-long field campaign, the group investigated the structural and sedimentary evolution of the Pyrenean fold-and-thrust belt, linking field observations to regional tectonic models. Through these activities, the PhD researchers gained valuable insight into the interaction of geological processes across spatial and temporal scales, and into how field-based data can be integrated with numerical modelling and remote-sensing approaches to improve the understanding and prediction of geohazards. The summer school was a highly inspiring experience that strengthened scientific collaboration within the INITIATE network and fostered new perspectives for future joint research.
