Precision preparation laboratory
In the laboratory for precision preparation, test specimens are produced from solid rocks and ceramics of different geometries with the highest standards of dimensional accuracy and surface quality for our experimental apparatus (see Laboratory for Rock Deformation and Rock Physics) and other areas of the GFZ. CNC milling and grinding machines with special diamond tools are used for this purpose. To increase precision and prevent rejects, especially with fragile and valuable sample material, clamping and holding devices for the samples themselves are developed and built in close co-operation with the high-pressure development laboratory.
3-axis surface grinding machine
The Ziersch Z 24 is a high-precision 3-axis surface grinding machine for processing flat surfaces with low tolerances. This machine is mainly used to produce precise cube samples from a wide variety of rocks for the TrueTriax. Thanks to the hydraulic axis movement and the stable machine design, we achieve outstanding dimensional accuracy and surface quality. Depending on the material and processing task, we achieve dimensional tolerances in the micrometre range.
Cylindrical and surface grinding machine
The Kellenberger UR 175 is a CNC-controlled cylindrical and surface grinding machine for high-precision internal and external machining of rotationally symmetrical workpieces. It is mainly used for the production of cylindrical samples with plane-parallel end faces and lateral surfaces of low tolerance and roughness
4-axis milling machine
The Kunzmann WF 4 CNC is a versatile 4-axis milling machine for precise cutting and grinding work on complex geometries. In our laboratory, it is used for machining hard and brittle materials such as rocks or mineral materials, especially when defined contours, bores, grooves or channels with high dimensional accuracy are required.
LASER processing
JustMark 6.4 from JustLaser is a compact and powerful laser system for the precise processing, marking and structuring of a wide range of materials. In our department, the device is primarily used for the production and customisation of technical seals, which are used in high-pressure experiments on the TrueTriax system. The laser can be used to create fine contours, openings and labelling quickly and without mechanical contact. The high precision of the system enables the precise production of function-critical sealing components that have to seal reliably under extreme test conditions.
