Monitoring

Background

Monitoring of earthquakes and volcano-magmatic processes is an important basis of our research and one of our core competencies. Our strength lies in the development and use of multiple data streams, in particular the combination of seismic and remote sensing to increase resolution and improve the detection of small signals.

The volume of monitoring data is growing exponentially. To explore and efficiently analyse the massive and large datasets, we develop advanced data-driven methods, software toolboxes and highly efficient ecosystems for waveform simulation, source modelling and inversion. Our open source products are built by researchers for researchers.

Scientific key questions

  • How can we further improve the measurement systems for the special requirements of volcano and earthquake monitoring?
  • How can we integrate the data streams into real-time analyses and combine them for interpretation?
  • How can ever larger amounts of data and data streams be analysed efficiently, automatically and with high quality?
  • How can we initiate and coordinate the joint development of ecosystems for data analysis and interpretation?
