The documentary “Our New World – The Climate Savers” features researchers studying natural carbon sinks
Martin Herold, Head of Section 1.4 | Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics, accepted the Climate Protection Film Award from Brandenburg’s “Ökofilmtour 2026” on behalf of the film crew of “Our New World – The Climate Savers.” The award was offered by the City of Potsdam.
“Our New World – The Climate Savers” is a 52-minute documentary that follows researchers as they investigate natural carbon sinks. The film (written and directed by Elena Sender and Alexis Barbier-Bouvet) asks: What if nature itself were our most valuable ally in the fight against climate change? It focuses primarily on the unique ability to sequester and store carbon dioxide. Where are natural carbon sinks located? How much CO2 can they absorb? In the film, Martin Herold and his team demonstrate how they monitor global forests via satellite and how crucial forest health is to their role as carbon sinks.
The documentary will be screened on June 10, 2026, at the Potsdam Film Museum (admission: 5 euros). Following the screening, there will be a discussion with Franziska Tanneberger from the Greifswald Moor Centrum, Martin Herold from the GFZ
