As part of being awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship, Prof. Andrés Tassara has begun his work at the GFZ. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supports exceptionally qualified scientists from around the world with the Humboldt Research Fellowship.
Prof. Andrés Tassara Oddo conducts research at the Institute of Earth Sciences ("Departamento de Ciencias de la Tierra") of the University of Concepción in Chile. He is an internationally recognized geophysicist whose outstanding work in seismotectonics and geodynamics has transformed our understanding of Andean subduction, megathrust segmentation, and the rheological structure of active continental margins.
During his research stay at the GFZ, he will collaborate with Sections 4.1 Lithosphere Dynamics and 4.5 Subsurface Process Modeling on an integrated 3D thermomechanical model of the southern Andean margin, to link deformation in the seismic cycle with long-term mountain building and contribute to a better understanding of seismic hazards and lithospheric dynamics.
About Prof. Andrés Humberto Tassara Oddo
After completing his Master’s degree in Geology at the University of Chile in 2001, Tassara moved to Germany, where he began his PhD at the Free University of Berlin. In 2005, he returned to Chile, where he subsequently spent 15 years conducting research and teaching in various roles at the University of Concepción (UdeC). In 2023, he was appointed Titular Professor. Alongside his academic career, Tassara served, among other roles, as Director of the Geosciences PhD programme from 2014 to 2018 and as Head of the Department of Geosciences from 2019 to 2021.
