This year, the GFZ (German Research Centre for Geosciences) will once again be present at the research camp with two tents on the grounds of the University of Potsdam, Campus Golm. The focus will be on "Scientific Drilling" and "Rocks Under the Microscope".
When? May 9, 2026, from 12-6 PM
Where? University of Potsdam, Campus Golm
On Saturday, May 9th, the thirteenth Potsdam Science Day will take place, again on the grounds of the University of Potsdam, Campus Golm, as in 2025. More than 40 research institutions, schools, and universities from Brandenburg will present their everyday work beyond the walls of their institutes.
The GFZ will be represented at the research camp with two tents, forming a small “Telegrafenberg” microcosm within the exhibition grounds together with RIFS, AWI, and PIK. Young and old, big and small – all curious explorers are warmly invited to visit our stands at the Schülerlabor (student laboratory) and Section 4.2:
Have you always wanted to know how granite, basalt, or sandstone were formed?
At the GFZ Student Laboratory stand, you'll dive into the fascinating world of rocks. Use the microscope to marvel at the hidden structures and minerals. Learn more about the formation of rocks, their composition, and where they can be found around the world. Exciting experiments and interesting facts await you!
Curious about what lies beneath our feet?
Then come by the GFZ stand “Scientific Drilling”. Here you will learn how researchers look deep into the Earth to better understand our planet and why such deep drilling is extremely important for climate, energy, and earthquake research. You will also learn where drilling is taking place around the world and what scientists hope to gain from it. Ask questions and be amazed, because there is a fascinating world to discover beneath the surface!
“Deep Drilling Adventure: What lies beneath the Earth?”
Dr. Ulrich Harms and Dr. Marie-Luise Adolph (PhD) will answer this question – in their interactive talk at 4 PM in the lecture hall on campus.
Come by – we look forward to seeing you!
